What is Visit Japan Web?

Excited to start your trip in Japan? Don’t forget Visit Japan Web! That makes your entry way smoother!

Because of COVID-19, Japan now digitalizes almost everything for the entry system at their international airports. If you had ever traveled to Japan before COVID-19, you must have the experience of filling out the Immigration and Customs forms by hand. Now all you have to do is to complete Visit Japan Web before your flight with your information including ~~Quarantine~~, Immigration and Customs. Note that it is not mandatory, but it is highly recommended by the Japanese government as it will take a lot more time if you do not have the QR codes generated from Visit Japan Web.

How to Setup?

Quarantine and COVID-19 Tests?

***Update***: “If you enter Japan after midnight Japan time on or after April 29th, 2023, valid vaccination certificate or pre-departure test is not required.”

My Experience

Before Flight

I arrived at Tokyo Narita Airport on Dec. 12, 2022 from the US and Dec. 30, 2022 from Taiwan so I had to complete Visit Japan Web twice. I got my booster in Dec., 2021 so I was kind of worried if this could pass the Japan Quarantine examination because it had been a year. It turned out as “Blue” meaning no quarantine needed after entry to Japan even though I still got another booster for my own sake. Although Visit Japan Web will tell you they examine your information by how close your flight departure time is, Japanese is so efficient that I got the approval within 1 day even though I submitted my information a month earlier than my departure from the US.

Arrival at Tokyo Narita

Don’t worry about the entry. Upon arrival, you will see a lot of airport staff to assist you on the way to all the stops at Quarantine, Immigration and Customs. All you have to do is show the correct QR code at the correct location. My arrival on Dec 30 2022 was so smooth that it only took me about 1 hr from arrival to jumping in the Skyliner train. Even to my surprise, my baggage was waiting for me at the baggage claim carousel lined up with other passengers’!

Customs

The funny phenomenon at Customs was there were shorter or no queues for paper Customs form than Visit Japan Web Customs QR code. If you are in a hurry for your transfer flight within Japan, filling out a paper Customs form will very likely get you faster out of the gate!

Summary

Visit Japan Web makes it so easy to enter Japan. Although it is not mandatory, it will save time and let you examine if you are eligible for entry ~~without any tests or quarantine~~ before your arrival in Japan.
